EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (4-2), off to its best start in 10 years, will look to continue its winning ways with two matches this weekend. The Miners will partake in the annual Battle of I-10 at NM State (8-5) at 10 a.m. MT Friday before returning home to welcome UC Irvine (4-4) to the El Paso Tennis Club at 10 a.m. MT Sunday.

UTEP, which had two away matches cancelled last week due to weather, last competed almost two weeks ago when it rolled past Lamar, 4-0 on Feb. 16. The Miners have won three of the past four, with all those victories coming via the shutout. Overall, the 4-2 record equals the best mark through six matches in dual play since also standing 4-2 at this juncture in 2014-15.

"We are ready to get back out on the court this weekend," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We always have a battle with New Mexico State, especially in Las Cruces. We expect nothing different this time around. Then we have UC Irvine coming here on Sunday. They are also a very solid team, and we know we will have to fight hard all weekend. The team is ready, and we will do our best to represent UTP with pride and class."

Carlotta Mencaglia has bene setting the tone, bolting out to a 5-0 mark at No. 1 singles. She now stands at 11-8 overall. Paloma Hennicaux is unbeaten at No. 3 (3-0), and she boasts the top record on the squad at 14-4 for the campaign. DeCora Antoine has stepped in nicely at No. 6 singles, standing 3-1 while Candice Bernier has battled to a 2-2 record at No. 2 singles.

Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska sport a team-best slate in doubles of 13-7 on the season, having competed at both the No. 1 (1-1) and No. 2 (2-2) positions. Antoine and Wendy Zhang have been cruising to the tune of 4-1 at No. 3 doubles.
