EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (2-1) claimed the doubles point before winning a trio of matches in singles on the way to a 4-0 vanquishing of Weber State (0-6) at the El Paso Tennis Club Thursday. The match was played using clinch format.
 
Carlotta Mencaglia, Candice Bernier and DeCora Antoine each picked up victories in singles action while the respective pairings of Zuzanna Szczepanska and Bernier and Wendy Zhang and Antoine delivered triumphs in doubles.
 
"The match today was closer than the score shows," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We had to really fight to get the doubles point coming back from down, 4-1, at No. 3 doubles by winning five straight games. At No. 1 doubles, we played with a lot of energy and intensity. In the singles we went up on just about every court. We played with a lot of determination while sticking to our game plan and closing out the match."
 
Szczepanska and Bernier made quick work of Jessica Hill and Aleks Bozinovska, 6-3, at No. 1 doubles. Mencaglia and Telzynska were defeated by Sydney Schnell and Alicia Morales, at No. 2 doubles. The Wildcats looked poised to take the point and early lead in the match with Cindy Li and Savannah Johnson holding a seemingly insurmountable advantage of 4-1 against Zhang and Antoine at No. 3 doubles. The Miners' duo dug deep and ripped off five games in a row to pull out the improbable victory and deliver the doubles point in the process as well.
 
Inspired by that rally, the Miners were locked in across the board in single action. Mencaglia bounced Schnell, 6-2, 3-0 (retired), at No. 1 singles. Bernier blasted Li, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while Antoine took out Bozinovska, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
 
UTEP took the first set in two of the other three matches before things went unfinished due to the clinch format in place.
 
The Miners will take aim at their second straight win when they play host to UTPB at 12 p.m. MT Sunday. Admission is free.
