EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (3-1) won its second straight match with a convincing 5-0 victory against UTPB (0-1) at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday. The Miners took all three matches in doubles before cruising in singles to lock up the contest. Two matches went unfinished with clinch format in place.
 
"We played solid today," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We were able to get all three doubles, won all the first sets in singles, and then it was a race to the finish. Overall, we had another good match today against a good DII program. They made us play, but we were up for the challenge."
 
Zuzanna Szczepanska and Candice Bernier blasted Brooke Runyan and Paige Bott, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. Carlotta Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska bounced Teodora Vrucan and Rhea Singh, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point. For good measure, Wendy Zhang and DeCora Antoine outsted Fanny Bergstrom and Tuva Asplund, 7-5, at No. 3 doubles.
 
UTEP kept things rolling in singles play. Mencaglia dismantled Runyan, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Hennicaux drilled Bergstrom, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles. Zhang cruised past Dinethya Dharmaratne, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5 singles while Telzynska knocked off Bott, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles.
 
Antoine was up, 7-5, 3-0, on Sophia Rashid at No. 6 singles and Bernier led Vrucan, 6-2, 4-3, at No. 2 singles when the match was halted.
 
The Miners will wrap up a season-opening six-match homestand with a pair of matches this coming week. UTEP will play host to I-25 rival New Mexico at 10 a.m. MT Friday before locking up with Lamar at 10 a.m. MT on Feb. 16.
