BATON ROUGE, La. – The UTEP tennis team opened a demanding stretch of three matches in five days with a convincing 4-0 win at Southern on Tuesday. The Miners (5-4) claimed the doubles point to start things strong before cruising to three singles triumphs to secure the victory against the Jaguars (0-8), with clinch format in place.
 
"We played solid tennis today," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We had some up and downs but were able to get it done."
 
Candice Bernier and Valeria Carreño Torres joined forces to throttle Paris Washington and Kai Wince, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles. DeCora Antoine and Paloma Hennicaux rolled past LaTesha Grant and Trinity Turner, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles. The match at No. 1 doubles went unfinished, with the team point locked up for the Orange and Blue.
 
UTEP continued to be in control in singles action. Mencaglia was practically perfect in smashing Washington, 6-0, 6-1, at No 1 singles. Carreño Torres blanked Wince, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles. Hennicaux also had that winning feeling, rolling past Shahd Habid, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 4 singles to wrap up the team triumph.
 
Bernier was up a set at No. 2 singles when her match was stopped. Telzynska and Antoine both had their matches halted as well.
 
The Miners will continue the busy week by playing at Nicholls State (2-4) at 1 p.m. MT/2 p.m. CT Thursday before concluding their stay in the state of Louisiana with a match at New Orleans (3-4) at 11 a.m. MT/12 p.m. CT Saturday.
