EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (6-4, 0-1 CUSA) will put its two-match winning streak on the line when it plays host to streaking WKU (12-6, 1-1 CUSA) at 12 p.m. MT Wednesday.
The Miners picked up a pair of road victories last week, knocking off Southern, 4-0, on March 11 before rallying back from a 3-0 deficit to stun Nicholls State, 4-3, on March 13. It marked the first time in nine years that the Orange and Blue have secured consecutive road triumphs against DI opposition.
UTEP will now be back home for the tilt against the Lady Toppers, but to push the overall winning streak to three, it will have to play some of its best tennis of the campaign. WKU has claimed three in a row and six of eight.
"We are excited to play some great CUSA rivals starting tomorrow," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We have four straight matches vs conference opponents. We know how important all these matches are in preparation for the CUSA championships next month. We are coming off a couple of good wins and hope to keep it going during the final month of our season. Western Kentucky is a strong team, but we feel like we are up for the challenge."
Fernandez's charges stand 6-4 overall, putting them one win shy of matching last year's win total. More impressive is that the mark of 6-4 is the top record through 10 matches at the school in 10 years. UTEP roared out to a 7-3 start in dual play in 2015 on the way to finishing at 12-5 on the campaign.
Hanna Telzynska (three), Valeria Carreño Torres (two),
Paloma Hennicaux (two) and
Carlotta Mencaglia (two) have all won multiple matches in a row in singles to set the tone for the Orange and Blue. Among active players on the squad, UTEP sports a combined singles record of 25-13 in dual action.
Following the matchup with the Lady Toppers, the Orange and Blue will venture to the Eastern Time Zone for two matches in as many days on the campus of Liberty. UTEP will challenge Middle Tennessee in a neutral-site match at 11 a.m. MT/1 p.m. ET Saturday before facing the host Flames at 11 a.m. MT/1 p.m. ET Sunday. The Miners then wrap up the stretch of four consecutive conference matches when they challenge Sam Houston on "Senior Day" at 12 p.m. MT on April 6.
