DALLAS – After forging a 2-0 mark at No. 1 singles to help the UTEP tennis pick up a pair of road wins,
Carlotta Mencaglia has been tabbed the Conference USA women's tennis Athlete of the Week, the league office revealed Wednesday.
It is the second career CUSA Athlete of the Week award for Mencaglia, who was also so honored on Feb. 15, 2023. The senior joins former Miner standout Vivienne Kulicke (March 1, 2016, and Jan. 24, 2017,) as the only individuals at the school to be selected as the CUSA women's tennis Athlete of the Week on multiple occasions.
"We are so proud of Lotti," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "She is such a great senior and leader on this team. She is battling through injuries but still playing with heart and pride. She truly leads this team by her example on and off the court."
She posted a 2-0 record at No. 1 singles, helping the Miners post back-to-back road victories against DI opponents for the first time since the 2015-16 season. She started things off with a nearly flawless performance in taking out Paris Washington, 6-0, 6-1, in a 4-0 victory against Southern on March 11.
Mencaglia followed that up by using all that she had in her arsenal to post a three-set victory (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) against Aada Inna. Her efforts helped UTEP rally from a 3-0 deficit in an eventual 4-3 vanquishing of Nicholls State on March 13.
