RUSTON, La. – Valeria Carreño Torres rolled to a win in straight sets at No. 5 singles, but the UTEP tennis team had its three-match winning streak halted in a 4-1 setback in the final match of the regular season at LA Tech (16-8, 5-0 CUSA) Sunday. The Miners (9-8, 1-5 CUSA) now will turn their attention to the CUSA Championships that begin Wednesday on the campus of Liberty, where they will enter armed with their first winning record in the regular season in nine years.
 
"This was a very tough la tech team that is undefeated in conference play," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We played tough today and fought hard but just couldn't get it done. Vale was our only singles win. She has been playing better and better with every match. I'm very proud of this team. We have been dealing with a lot, and they still found a way to stay together and come out with a regular season winning record. I can't ask for any more from them."
 
The Orange and Blue put up a good fight in doubles action, but the Bulldogs secured victories at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the early lead. DeCora Antoine and Hanna Telzynska were clipped, 6-4, by Zoie Epps and Ana Rodrigues at No. 1 doubles. Carlotta Mencaglia and Valeria Carreño Torres went down swinging, 6-3, against Alice Brook and Maria Tsironi at No. 2 doubles. Candice Bernier and Paloma Hennicaux's match vs. Mio Kozaki and Nina Skoric at No. 3 doubles went unfinished.
 
Carreño Torres was in top form in singles action, as she cruised past Brook, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. The home side picked up triumphs on three other courts, though, to clinch the affair. Telzynska was bounced by Epps, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Hennicaux was upended by Kozaki, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Wendy Zhang was dispatched by June Vigneron, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.
 
The other two matches went unfinished. Mencaglia was on the verge of forcing at third set at No. 1 singles vs. Rodrigues. Bernier was looking to do the same at No. 3 singles vs. Tsironi.
