EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (7-7, 1-4 CUSA) claimed the doubles point and never looked back on the way to a 4-0 vanquishing of Sam Houston (5-9, 0-5 CUSA) on "Senior Day" at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday. It marked the fifth consecutive victory on "Senior Day" for the Miners, who honored Carlotta Mencaglia in a post-match ceremony.
 
"We came out fighting today and were able to get the doubles and took care of singles to get the win on 'Senior day'," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "It's always a challenge when you play a short-handed team, but we knew they were going to fight. We kept our focus and got it done. It was such an honor to recognize Lotti today. She has been a great asset to this team and will be missed by all."
 
With the Bearkats suiting up just five players, Paloma Hennicaux and DeCora Antoine won by default at No. 3 doubles. Candice Bernier and Hanna Telzynska then rolled past Christine Jevicky and Adithi Venkatakrishnan, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles to lock up the point and early team lead. Mencaglia and Valeria Carreño Torres were leading Nayuma Subba and Aaliyah Homann, 4-2, when the match was halted.
 
Wendy Zhang had the default triumph at No. 6 singles with the Bearkats unable to suit up an individual at that slot. Carreño Torres cruised past Elia Fitcher, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5 singles. Bernier blasted Venkatakrishnan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to clinch the match for the Orange and Blue. The three other matches went unfinished with the team outcome decided.
 
The Miners will look to build on the win when they wrap up the regular season with three matches in as many days in Louisiana. They will play at ULM (April 11), vs. Grambling State (April 12) and at LA Tech (April 13) before commencing the 2025 CUSA Championships on April 16.
