UTEP XC’s Men’s Squad Places Third at Arizona’s Dave Murray Invitational Saturday Morning

TUCSON, Ariz. – UTEP Cross Country's men's team took third place in the 8k event at Arizona's Dave Murray Invitational at Tucson Country Club on Saturday morning.

The men finished third of eight programs with a score of 62, behind Grand Canyon (57) and host and team champion Arizona (41). Rival NM State was fourth with 96 points.

"Our men ran an excellent race today, coming in third place," UTEP distance coach Justin Herbert said. "Unfortunately, we were missing one of our top guys today, or we might have contended for the win, but we had some young guys step up and contribute when we needed them. On the women's side, we had some strong performances, as we continue to build."

UTEP's Luis Pastor was the top Miner and fifth overall of 89 competitors with a time of 24:52.9. Andrés Gurrola finished seventh overall with a time of 24:52.9. Paul Rotich finished 13^th overall (25:12.4) in his first career collegiate 8k race. Carmelo Corral finished 14^th (25:15.8). Israel Quintana (26:12.4), Nethaneel Taylor (26:19.5), Jacob Yeager (26:40.7), Evan Avitia (27:10.6), Aron Tanui (27:25.3), Malin Arnoldussen (27:28.5) and Christian Hurtado (28:17.5) rounded out the order of finish for the Miners.

The women's team had a DNF; however, Vallary Kiplagat was the top Miner on the women's side with a 16^thoverall finish, clocking in a time of 23:23.4. Salma Licon (23:38.1), Isabella Campa (26:50.3) and Bobbi Guillen (28:09.5) rounded out the order of finish for the women's team.

UP NEXT
UTEP will conclude regular season action at Texas A&M's prestigious Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station on Friday, Oct. 17. The Conference USA Cross Country Championships will follow on Saturday, Nov. 1.
