UTEP Cross Country Set to Host 40th Lori Fitzgerald Invitational Saturday Morning

EL PASO – UTEP will host the 40^th Lori Fitzgerald Invitational, its first home meet since the 2019 campaign, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at Ascarate Park.

The Lori Fitzgerald Invitational returns to the Sun City for the first time in seven years. The women's 5k begins at 7 a.m., followed by the men's 8k at 7:45 a.m. The meet is free to all fans and spectators.

Competing for the women's squad are Aubrey Arsenault, Isabella Campa, Kissleine Casarez, Bobbi Guillen, Mia Hairston, Brenda Jerop, Vallary Kiplagat, Salma Licon, Ashlyn McMillan, and Sofia Ramirez.

Running for the men's team are Carmelo Corral, Julian Franco, Ameen Ibrahim, Nathan Kapel, Juan Leal, Frankie Medina, Sebastian Mendez, Israel Quintana, Paul Rotich and Jacob Yeager.

"We're excited to compete at home this weekend and have the opportunity to represent UTEP in front of our community," second-year UTEP head coach Francesca Green said. "The Lori Fitzgerald Invitational is special to our program because it allows us to honor the tradition and impact Lori had on UTEP Track & Field and Cross Country. We had a solid start to the season, but we know there is another level for this group. We've had two weeks to get back to work, make some adjustments, and continue building. I'm looking forward to seeing us compete with confidence, work together as a team, and take another step forward this weekend."

El Paso Community College and NM State will also compete Saturday morning.

A BIT OF LORI FITZGERALD HISTORY
Lori Fitzgerald, a native of Denver, Colo., was recruited to UTEP by then-cross country and distance coach Gary Mazziotti in 1985. She was offered a full academic scholarship to attend Brown University at the end of her high school career. Fitzgerald chose to become a student-athlete at The University of Texas at El Paso.

Fitzgerald was with the program for only three weeks in El Paso before a tragic accident. She was hit by a farming truck in the Upper Valley of Sunland Park Drive while warming up for the team's last time trial run to determine the top seven runners. It happened a week before what would have been her first cross country competition at UTEP.
