CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – UTEP combined for six wins between singles and doubles action on the final day of the Islander Open (hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi) on Sunday.
"Today was a much better day," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We really competed well and had a good finish. This tournament was a great learning experience and team building opportunity for us. It really showed us what we need to continue to work on to keep improving and get to where we want to be in the spring."
In doubles
Thassane Abrahim and
Veronika Lebisova blasted Lamar's Noelia Lorca and Elena Rodriguez.
Elena Dibattista and
Eve Daniels teamed up to down Lamar's Jayci Wong and Lou Dupuis, 6-2.
Lina Sachica and
Kathleen Percegona were upended by UTRGV's Isabelle Bahr and Kristyna Mamicova, 6-0.
The Miners found four more victories in singles action. Lebisova drilled Dupuis (Lamar), 6-2, 6-2. Freshman
Laura Schmitz took down Wong (Lamar), 6-2, 6-3. Daniels waxed Stefanie Wilske (UTRGV), 6-2, 6-1. Sachica defeated Ana Plastia (UTRGV), 6-3, 6-4.
Abrahim went down fighting to Alicia Thal (UTRGV), 6-4, 1-6, 10-7. It was a similar story for Percegona in her match against Emma Honore (TAMUCC), with the final score of 6-1, 2-6, 10-7. Dibattista was dispatched by Camille Townsend (TAMUCC), 6-3, 6-3.
UTEP will conclude the fall portion of its season at the North Texas Mean Green Invitational Nov.5-7.
