UTEP Track & Field Opens Indoor Season at MLK Invite on Saturday Morning

EL PASO –
 After not competing during the 2021 indoor season, the UTEP track and field team will return to the indoor facilities in 2022 as it opens the new campaign at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Saturday in the Albuquerque Convention Center. 
 
The men's and women's pole vault events will begin at 9 a.m., while the day will conclude with the men's 4x400 relay (4 p.m.) and the women's 4x400 (4:15 p.m.).

UTEP will compete against host New Mexico, Adams State, Arizona State, Azusa Pacific, Cal, CSU Pueblo, Eastern New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Nevada, NM State, New Mexico Highlands, Pepperdine, San Francisco, Trinidad State, West Texas A&M and UC Irvine. 
 
Making the trip for the UTEP women's side are Loubna Benhadja (600m, 4x4), Chinique Brown (4x4), Oghenekaro Brume (600m, 4x4), Maribel Caicedo (200m, 60m H), Carolyne Chepkosgei (mile), Samantha Cordier (shot put, weight throw), Lizbeth Fierro (shot put, weight throw), Carshaylah Harrison (60m H, 4x4), Asia Hodge (60m, 200m), Krishna Jayasankar (shot put),  Ruth Jerubet (3000m), Celina Johannsen (pole vault), Joan Kimaiyo (3000m), Kayla Larry (weight throw), Denae McFarlane (60m, 200m), Natalie Murillo (shot put, weight throw), Marissa Simpson (60m H), Sah-Jay Stevens (shot put, weight throw) and Karen Villa (60m, shot put).
 
Benhadja, Fierro, Jayasankar, Johannsen, Simpson and Villa are making their UTEP debuts this weekend. 
 
Traveling on the men's side are Ned Azemia (400m, 4x4), Jakub Belik (high jump), Davion Bynaum (60m), Jalen Cadet (60m, 200m, long jump), Stephen Carreto (400m, 4x4), Benjamin Coronado (shot put, weight throw), Karon Dean (60m, 200m), Ronaldo Griffiths (400m, 4x4), Aleks Hristov (shot put, weight throw), Dennis Johnson (60m, 200m), Victor Kibiego (3000m), Rodgers Korir (3000m), Yusuf Mohamud (mile), Misael Ortiz (shot put, weight throw), Jevaughn Powell (400m, 4x4), Emilio Rios Jr. (high jump), Michael Sims (mile), Lorenz Smith (400m), Kenneth Talavera (mile), Aman Verma (400m), Osaze Williams (600m) and Jordani Woodley (60m H). 
 
Belik, Cadet, Carreto, Dean, Kibiego, Smith, Verma and Woodley are also making their UTEP debuts this season. 
 
This weekend's trip will start a string of three events in Albuquerque, as the Miners will compete at the New Mexico Team Open on Jan. 29 and the Don Kirby Elite Invitational. The Conference USA Indoor Championships will be held on Feb. 19-20 in Birmingham, Ala., and the indoor season will conclude at the NCAA National Championships March 11-12, also in Birmingham.
