ABILENE, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (2-5) downed Division III Hardin-Simmons (1-3), 7-0, on the road Sunday afternoon. The Miners won every match contested on the day after not competing for three weeks.
 
"After a few weeks without a match we were a bit rusty and it took us a while to get going," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We will surely come out fighting tomorrow."
 
Kathleen Percegona and Carlotta Mencaglia got things going with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles against Laurel Coleman and Skylar Rust. Veronika Lebisova and Thassane Abrahim then drilled Lauren Schaeffer and Priscilla Schimming, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles to lock up the team point. For good measure, Eve Daniels and Lina Sachica took out Brianne Dumas and Jonnah Smith, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.
 
It was more of the same for UTEP in singles action where it took all six matches in straight sets. Carlotta Mencaglia extended her winning streak to three with a 6-2, 6-2 vanquishing of Landry Laywell at No. 4 singles. Lebisova blasted Schimming, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles while Sachica waxed Rust, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
 
Laura Schmitz took out Smith, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6, which was followed by Percegona taking care of business, 7-6, 6-0, at No. 1 singles against Schaeffer. Dibattista wrapped up the match by downing Coleman, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 singles.
 
The Miners will shoot for their second road win in as many days when they square off at Abilene Christian at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT Monday.
