EL PASO, Texas– The UTEP tennis team (6-10) went back-and-forth with visiting NM State (6-13), before succumbing 4-3 in a four-hour match at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday morning. The Miners won the doubles point only to have the Aggies fight back to take the match by claiming four of six in singles action.
Veronika Lebisova posted a straight set (6-0, 6-3) win against Bella Nguyen at No. 5 singles.
Elena Dibattista showed her mettle in a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 triumph at No. 4 singles versus Gavi Kalaga.
"Today was a battle entire way through," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We knew it was going to be a battle. I am very proud of how hard we fought today. It's unfortunate that it came out the way it did, but I really loved the energy that the team played with today."
UTEP began strong with Lebisova and
Thassane Abrahim cruising past Chloe Gavino and Mingfang Zhu, 6-2, at No 1 doubles.
Kathleen Percegona and Dibattista then teamed up to take out Nguyen and Miranda Bishard, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles, to lock up the early lead in the match for the Miners.
Carlotta Mencaglia and
Eve Daniels were leading Natsuki Nishimura and Kalaga, 5-4, when it went unfinished with the team point decided.
Lebisova and Dibattista took care of business in singles to set the tone.
Lina Sachica won her first set, 6-1, but suffered 7-6 setbacks in the ensuing two sets against Nisimura at No. 3 singles. Abrahim also took her first set, 7-6, but went down, 6-4, 6-4, in the final two sets against Bishard at No. 6 singles.
Mencaglia was upended, 7-5, 6-2, by Zhu at No. 2 singles, which halted a five-match winning streak for the freshman. Percegona played well in a 6-4, 6-4, vanquishing at the hands of Gavino at No. 1 singles.
UTEP returns to action when it wraps up the regular season at home with a pair of matches, facing Seward County Community College (April 15) and the University of the Southwest (April 17) Both matches will commence at 11 a.m., and admission is free.
