UTEP Men’s Golf Finishes Third at Bayou City Classic

FINAL DAY RESULTS

MONGOMERY, Texas – The UTEP men's golf team penciled its best finish of the season, placing third at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic hosted by Rice, Houston and Sam Houston at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club (par 72 – 6,756 yards) on Tuesday afternoon. 
 
The Miners (310-287-289—886) fired a 289 in the final round, tying tournament champion Florida Atlantic (303-284-289—876) for the lowest third-round score. Sam Houston (299-288-294—881) finished second.
 
"I'm happy with the result and excited to use the momentum from this week to prepare us for the C-USA Championship in two weeks," UTEP Head Coach Aaron Puetz said. "We've learned a lot this year and it's great to see us trending the way we are this late in the spring. Go Miners!" 
 
El Paso product Greg Yellin shot up 13 spots to tied seventh after shooting a 69 in the final round. Yellin (76-73-69—218) finished as the top Miner for the third time this season, while placing in the top 10 for a second time. 
 
Marcus Khaw (79-71-72—222) bolted up 10 spots, finishing tied for 20th after shooting a solid 72 in the third round. Danny Daniels (79-74-71—224) made the biggest jump, moving up 20 spots to tied 26th after shooting 1-under par on the final 18 holes. Greg Holmes (90-69-79—238) moved up three spots to tied 70th, and Jacob Presutti (76-0-77—153), who missed the second round, overcame an injury and competed in the third round.
 
FAU's Alex Maguire (69-70-74—213) held on to his top spot on the leaderboard and captured the individual title after defeating NM State's Garrison Smith (72-70-71—213) in a two-hole sudden death. UT Arlington's Paul Gonzalez (67-75-73—215) finished in third place. 
 
UTEP led the field with four eagles. Khaw claimed a pair of those, tying with three other student-athletes for the most. Khaw recorded the first one during Monday's second round action on hole 16 (par 5, 519 yards), while also eagling on hole 10 (par 5, 533) on Tuesday. Holmes eagled at 15 (par 4, 400) in the second round, and Daniels posted an eagle at 16 on Tuesday.
 
Yellin and Khaw each shot 5-under on par 5 holes, tying for first with three other competitors on that list. Daniels and Yellin each tallied a team-high nine birdies.
 
The Miners shot a field-best 20-over on par 4 holes and 4-under par on par 5 holes. UTEP added 37 birdies and 141 pars.

UTEP will look for a league title at the 2022 Conference USA Championship on April 25-28 in Texarkana, Ark.
