Battle of the Picks: UTEP Softball Edition

EL PASO – The UTEP Softball team (10-16, 2-4 Conference USA) hits the road this week as they face off against Charlotte (16-12, 4-2 C-USA) for a three-game series at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. The games will be played on Friday (March 24) at 4 p.m. MT, Saturday (March 25) at 11 a.m. MT, and Sunday (March 26) at 10 a.m. MT. 

The matchups will be streamed on ESPN+, with live stats also available.   

 
 
Leading Off for the Miners   

  • UTEP leads Conference USA in doubles (46) doubles per game (1.77), and slugging percentage (0.501). The Miners' doubles count ranks 16th in the NCAA.    

  • UTEP batted .295 through 26 games (which included a Top 5 opponent) paced by four players with 50-plus plate appearances who were batting at or above the mark (Morales, Favre, Dooner, Brockway). Leading the way is junior Lexi Morales who is hitting .403 on 31 hits with nine (9) doubles and 15 RBI. She's slugged .558 with a .547 on-base percentage.      

  • Morales is one of eight (8) Miners to have double digit RBIs already on the season, with Savannah Favre leading the way with 22.  

  • Against WKU, Peyton Angulo went 3-for-9 in the batter's box with a home run for four (4) RBI.   

  • Ten (10) players have posted at least one home run for the Miners. UTEP has shredded more home runs than its opponents, 32-29, through 26 games with Favre and Ajia Richard accounting for five (5) each.  

  • Eight (8) arms combined in the circle against WKU with Aalijah Alarcon tabbing a win in the series opener. Alarcon combined for 10.2 innings with a team-high nine (9) strikeouts.  

  • UTEP has had 23 of 25 players see action during a game at some point this season.

CHARLOTTE  

  • Charlotte sits at 15-8 on the season     

  • The team is led by Kassidy Krupit with a .396 batting average on 36 hits. She is slugging .604 with a .466 on-base percentage    

  • Charlotte has utilized six (6) pitchers through 28 games, with Sam Gress leading the charge with a team-high 84.2 innings in 14 appearances and 10 starts. Gress (10-4) has a 2.15 ERA with 57 strikeouts, has given up 21 walks, 77 hits and 36 runs allowed (26 earned). As a staff, the Niners carry a 3.49 ERA, allowing 211 hits and striking out 137. They have given up 44 doubles, two (2) triples and 23 home runs.    

  • UTEP leads the all-time series 2-1.
