7/13/2023 9:00:00 AM

EL PASO – UTEP Softball Coach T.J. Hubbard announced on Thursday that David Montoya is joining the Miner staff as an assistant coach. Montoya most recently was an assistant coach at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Ky.

"Brittney [Matta] and I are excited to introduce David Montoya as our program's newest assistant coach," Hubbard said. "David's baseball background, coupled with his coaching style, are a perfect match for our system. His success with developing athletes offensively and defensively, and his ability to scout and game plan, will be huge additions to our coaching staff. David will be tasked with player development, analytics and game planning while assisting with recruiting efforts."

For the past three seasons, Montoya served as assistant to the eight-time Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, Shannon Wathen. Along the way, the Lady Tigers grabbed a share of the 2021 MSC regular season title. The Lady Tigers then won three MSC Tournament games to capture the crown before falling in the NAIA Opening Round to Olivet Nazarene.

"I am tremendously thankful for this amazing opportunity to join the UTEP softball program," Montoya said. "I cannot wait to move back home and get to work!"

Prior to coaching, Montoya worked in the CU enrollment office as a counselor to help students and student-athletes make their way to Campbellsville University.

As a player on the CU baseball team, Montoya was a two-time All Mid-South Conference performer at second base. He started 120 of his 121 games played over two seasons in 2017 and 2018. Montoya finished his career with a slash line (AVG/OBP/SLG) of .307/.391/.473 with 130 hits, 30 doubles, 12 home runs, and 81 RBI.

The Las Cruces, N.M. native earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Business Administration from CU in 2018 and 2019.
