UTEP Soccer Adds Obed Hernandez to Staff

EL PASO, Texas – El Paso native Obed Hernandez, who has been both a standout player and head coach in the Sun City, has joined the UTEP soccer team's staff, it was announced by head coach Gibbs Keeton Wednesday. A former All-City Goalkeeper with Hanks HS, Hernandez will work primarily with the Miners' netminders.

"UTEP continues to show a great capacity to support our student athletes while providing us a full staff as we add Obed Hernandez, an El Paso native, and longtime friend to complete our staff," Keeton said. "Obed will immediately integrate into the team and staff with trust and understanding of the task at hand. Obed is a GK specialist and a great goalkeeper himself. He will primarily work with our talented goalkeepers. Obed's experience in El Paso as a top youth and high school coach will continue to link our program to our community. We are excited to add a high-level local coach to our staff."

While starring with Hanks HS, he helped lead the team to a pair of trips to the Sweet 16. An injury halted his playing career, but he then shifted his focus to coaching. He began at the club level in the city before being named head coach at San Elizario for the girls' varsity team in 2010. He amassed more than 100 victories, led the squad to five consecutive district championships and a bid to the Sweet 16.

Hernandez possesses a United States Soccer Federation C license, in addition to a Pro Coaching License from the Mexican Soccer Federation.
