LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Hanna Telzynska claimed a backdraw title to highlight the action for the UTEP tennis team on the final day of the NM State Aggie Invite Sunday. Telzynska and
Carlotta Mencaglia joined forces to secure second-place honors in the main draw of doubles after a close call in the finals.
"It was not as good a day as we hoped to have but there were a lot of positives," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We were fighting hard on every court today, and I know we will continue to improve. It was a really good learning experience. Now, we just need to put it to good use."
Mencaglia and Telzynska's bid for a championship in doubles didn't come to fruition, with the duo's three-match winning streak to the start the season halted following a narrow 8-6 setback against Anna Pinaieva and Whitney Moon (NM State), 8-6.
Telzynska secured the crown in her backdraw after besting Moon, 6-3, 6-4. Mencaglia went down swinging in her bid for a consolation trophy, falling to Mingfang Lisa Zhu (NM State), 1-6, 7-5, 7-10.
DeCora Antoine came up just shy too in the same situation, being upended by Li Mann-Ning (Western New Mexico), 1-6, 7-6, 5-7.
Elena Dibattista was clipped in her third/fourth-place showing match vs. Natsuki Nishimura (NM State), 5-7, 6-2, 2-6.
The Miners will return to action at the SDSU Invite from Sept. 29-Oct. 1.
