FINAL RESULTS
LUBBOCK, Texas – Behind a tenth-place finish from
Lea Dawson in her first event as a Miner, UTEP women's golf took home fifth at the Red Raider Invitational on Tuesday at The Rawls Course (par 72, 6,563 yards).
Dawson, a transfer from Memphis, impressed right away with her new team by firing an even-par 216 (76, 68, 72) that was highlighted by a 4-under par second round that was the lowest 18-hole total in her collegiate career.
Nawel Ben Letaief shot a 7-over par 223 (73, 76, 74) for the tournament to tie for 21st as she continues to shine in early season action.
Andrea Ostos was right behind Ben Letaief with a 9-over par 225 (76, 75, 74) as she tied for 27th.
All eight members of the UTEP roster competed in the event, including the season debuts for Dawson,
Marta Romeu Chen and
Ella Hammond-Baveystock.
Romeu Chen picked up an eagle on the 554-yard 18th hole in opening round play on the way to tying for 33rd with a 228 (73, 76, 79) score.
Freshman
Taline Kyoumjian also tied for 33rd with a 228 (78, 74, 76).
Three players competed as individuals for UTEP, including
Daniela Chipchase (233),
Luciana Origel (242) and Hammond-Baveystock (244). Chipchase tied for 44th, Origel ranked 53rd and Hammond-Baveystock 55th.
As a team, the Miners were within two strokes of Campbell for third and one stroke behind Abilene Christian for fourth.
Host Texas Tech ran away with the tournament with a 17-under par 847 to win by 29 strokes.
Maja Ambroziak of the Lady Raiders claimed top individual with a 7-under par 209.
UTEP has a week off before returning to action on Oct. 9-11 at the Golf Iconic Classic hosted by NM State.
