UTEP Tennis Continues Season-Opening Homestand This Weekend

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (1-0) will be back in action with two matches in as many days at the El Paso Tennis Club this weekend. The Miners will play host to Tarleton State (0-0) at 10 a.m. MT Friday before wrapping up the weekend against Weber State (0-0) at 10 a.m. MT Saturday. Admission for both contests is free.

UTEP flexed its muscle with a 7-0 dismantling of Division II Western New Mexico in the season opener on Jan. 20. The Orange and Blue claimed every match contested, and the outcome was never in doubt. It marked the first of four consecutive home matches to start the season for UTEP, which will wrap up the stretch against UT Arlington on Feb. 7.

For now, however, the Miners are fixated completely on the opposition in front of them. The Orange and Blue have claimed four of the past five match-ups with the Texans, although TSU did emerge victorious in the most-recent match during the 2021-22 season. UTEP will be locking up with Weber State for the third time in the past four years, but this time the contest will be held at home as opposed to a neutral site.

"We have two very competitive teams coming to El Paso this weekend in Tarleton State and Weber State," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "Weber State won the Big Sky Championship (to play in the NCAA Tournament) last year and Tarleton State was the No. 2 seed in the WAC. We know we have our work cut out for us. We are ready for the challenge and plan to come out with a lot of energy and intensity."

Five of the Miners' six victories in singles action during the triumph against WNMU came in straight sets, including DeCora Antoine not even dropping a game. Carlotta Mencaglia held down the top spot, followed by Zuzanna Szczepanska at the second slot.

Hanna Telzynska proved her mettle at No. 3 singles with a three-set victory. Elena Dibattista and Paloma Hennicaux also found the win column. UTEP won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. The Miners secured a back-and-forth match, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles.
