JACKSONVILLE, Ala. –
UTEP women's basketball (8-11, 3-3 CUSA) is on the road to face off against new CUSA rival Jax State (6-12, 1-5 CUSA) on Thursday evening. The Miners are looking to capitalize on the momentum of last week's two-win home stand.
 
The Miners and Gamecocks are set to tipoff at 5:30 p.m. MT/ 6:30 p.m. CT.

PREVIOUSLY ON...
UTEP improved to 8-11 on the year (3-3 CUSA) with its win 66-61 over Sam Houston Saturday. Jane Asinde had a team-high 16 points to lead the Miners, followed by Aaliyah Stanton with nine. Luisa Vydrova and Ivane Tensaie both put up eight points. The Orange and Blue were down with less than five minutes to play, but a clutch three from Tensaie tied the game at 59, and defensive stops in the final stretch of the game pushed the Miners to victory.
 
STANTON NAMED CUSA FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Aaliyah Stanton earned her second Conference USA Freshman of the Week honor of the season after two stout performances against LA Tech and Sam Houston. She posted 13 points on 4-6 shooting and went 4-of-5 from the foul line against the Lady Techsters. Against Sam Houston, Stanton put up nine points. four assists, and a rebound to help give the Miners the edge.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE QUEEN
Jane Asinde tallied her eighth double-double of the season against the Bearkats (16 points, 13 rebounds). That puts her at 49 career double-doubles, including 28 at the Division I level.
 
SOW PROVIDES A SPARK
Mariama Sow had another impactful performance against Sam Houston. She matched her career-high in points with six and added a career-best seven rebounds.
 
GAME ON THE LINE
Aaliyah Stanton scored all nine of her points in the final quarter of play to help lift the Miners to victory over the Bearkats. She shot 50.0 percent (3-6) from the floor while also dishing out a team-high four assists and grabbing one rebound.
 
STUFFING THE STAT SHEET
Mahri Petree put in two complete games for the Miners last week. She averaged 11 points, five rebounds, two assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.5 blocks against LA Tech and Sam Houston.
 
SHARPSHOOTER
Luisa Vydrova has averaged 76.9 percent from the floor over her last three games (5-5 at WKU, 2-4 vs LA Tech, 3-4 vs Sam Houston.)
 
SHARING THE WEALTH
Nine different Miners scored against Sam Houston. The team shot 59.1 percent from the field (26-44), which is its highest shooting percentage of the 2023-24 season.
 
DEFENSIVE HUSTLE
Jane Asinde leads Conference USA and ranks 22nd in the NCAA in defensive rebounds per game (7.2).
 
GETTING TO THE LINE
The Miners are averaging 20.47 free throw attempts per game, good enough for third in the league and 60th in the nation.
 
PERIMETER DEFENSE
UTEP held its opponent to 30 percent or less from three for the fourth straight game and seventh time this season against the Bearkats (26.7). The best defensive effort came against Lamar, where the Cardinals shot just 18.8 percent (3-16) from beyond the arc.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE THE TROUBLE
Jane Asinde (eight) and Erin Wilson (seven) are one of four pairs of teammates in the country that have recorded at least seven double doubles each. The other three duos are LSU's Angel Reese and Aneesah Morrow, Stanford's Cameron Brink and Kiki Iriafen, and Texas A&M's Janiah Barker and Lauren Ware. Asinde is ranked second in CUSA and 36th in the nation in double doubles, while Wilson sits third in the league and 48th in the NCAA.
 
IN THE RANKS
Jane Asinde leads CUSA and ranks 22nd in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7.2). She also leads the league and sitting 23rd nationally in free throw attempts (119) and is first in conference, 41st in the country in free throws made (82). Erin Wilson ranks second in CUSA, 77th in the NCAA in rebounds (164) and is fourth in the league, 70th in the country in rebounds per game (8.6).
 
THE COUNTDOWN IS ON
Keitha Adams is just one game away from 500 career victories as a head coach. 291 of those wins have come at the helm of the UTEP women's basketball program.
 
SCOUTING JAX STATE
The Gamecocks are 6-12 on the year and 1-5 in conference play. They are putting up 59.8 points and 37.7 rebounds per game. The team is ranked second in the nation, 29th in the nation in bench points per game (25.9) and lead the conference while sitting 45th in the country in fouls per game (14.6). Jax State also leads CUSA and ranks 42nd nationally in three point attempts per game (24.1) and are second in the league, 98th in the NCAA in defensive rebounds per game (26.6). Bre'Anna Rhodes paces the team in both scoring (9.1) and rebounding (5.1). Kristol Ayson (7.2), Keiara Griffin (6.6), Jaz Spencer (6.2) and Brooklyn McDaniel round out the top five scorers. Mya Barnes sits second on the team in rebounding with 5.0, and Griffin ranks third with 4.8 rebounds per game. Elsie Harris posts a team-high 1.9 assists per game, while Ayson leads the Gamecocks in steals at 1.1. Barnes leads Jax State in blocks (1.1). Rhodes is shooting a team-best 48.6 percent from the floor while Rachel Johnson leads the team from beyond the arc (35.9). Griffin has hit 90.0 percent (9-10) of her foul shots this season.
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE GAMECOCKS
This will be the first ever meeting between the Miners and the Gamecocks. Jax State joined UTEP in CUSA ahead of the 2023-24 season.
