EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team will lock up with the best players in the region when it competes in the ITA Mountain Regionals, which will commence Thursday and be hosted by NM State.
"It's great that our regional championships are close to home at NM State," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We are coming in with a lot of confidence and hopefully we can keep up the energy this week and have a good showing."
Carlotta Mencaglia and
Candice Bernier will represent the Miners in the main draw of singles. Bernier sports a 4-2 mark thus far after transferring from NC Central, including winning three straight and four of her first five matches with UTEP. Mencaglia has displayed her talents as well, most notably with a straight set (6-3, 7-6) vanquishing of a player from SMU.
UTEP, which has produced a sparkling combined record of 14-4 in doubles thus far, will deploy a trio of pairings in the main draw. Mencaglia and
Hanna Telzynska, who were All-CUSA recipients a year ago, have picked up right where they left off. The duo stands 5-1 in doubles, with wins over opponents from ACU, NM State and UTSA, among others.
Zuzanna Szczepanska and Bernier will look to stay hot. The pairing is 5-1 in doubles, aided by five straight triumphs to christen the campaign. Rounding out the entrants in the main draw for doubles for UTEP are
Paloma Hennicaux and
Wendy Zhang. This is the second event that they've competed together, most recently winning their last match.
Furthermore, Hennicaux, Szczepanska, Telzynska and Zhang will try to punch a ticket to the main draw in singles as well. Each would need to emerge victorious twice to make the main draw.
