UTEP WBB Faces Off Against UTSA in Saturday Matinee

– The UTEP women's basketball team welcomes UTSA to the Don Haskins Center Saturday. The action is slated to tipoff at 11 a.m. MT. The game will serve as the Miners' "Noche Latina" celebration and will feature a halftime performance as well as food specials at the concession stands.

LAST WEEK ON...
UTEP moved to 2-0 on the year after a 68-41 dismantling of Morehead State Sunday (11/10). The Miners shot 40.3 percent (27-67) from the field, 26.3 percent (5-19) from three, and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the charity stripe. Luisa Vydrova paced the team with 18 points, followed by Ivane Tensaie with 16. Dunja Zecevic, Portia Adams, and Ndack Mbengue each dropped seven for UTEP. Mary Moses Amaniyo pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Vydrova nabbed seven. The Miners posted 34 points in the paint, 21 fast break points and 20 bench points in the contest.
 
KAYLA THORNTON DAY IN EL PASO
UTEP WBB and the city of El Paso honored Miner great and 2024 WNBA champ, Kayla Thornton, during Sundays game against the Eagles. She was presented with the key to the city and had her jersey raised to the rafters of the Don Haskins Center to celebrate all of her accomplishments. Furthermore, November 10th is now recognized as "Kayla Thornton Day" in the city.
 
POINTS AT A PREMIUM
The UTEP defense has held both opponents this season to under 50 points, which is the first time since the 2021-22 season that the Miners have held two opponents under that mark to start the season.
 
TENACIOUS D
The Orange and Blue held the Eagles to just 22.0 percent (11-50) shooting, which is the 10th lowest FG% allowed in program history. Furthermore, the 17.6 (3-17) 3FG% by Morehead State is the lowest allowed by the Miners since 2/25/23, when they held FIU to just 8.3 percent (1-12) from three.
 
SHARING THE WEALTH
10 different UTEP players scored against the Eagles. Additionally, every available Miner featured in the contest.
 
SHARP SHOOTING
The Miners made five threes for the second straight game, led by Ivane Tensaie with three made threes.
 
MINER ACCOUNTS: OPENED
Five players scored their first points in Orange and Blue against Morehead State. Osadebamwen Igbinedion Omoruyi (four), Thelma Barbitch (three), Irene Asensio (two) and Yagmur Canguven (two) all tallied their first career collegiate points while JC transfer Ndack Mbengue (seven) earned her first points at the Division I level.
 
RIPPING DOWN THE REBOUNDS
The Miners outrebounded the visitors by 19, 53-34, including pulling down eight more offensive boards than the Eagles (17-9).
 
BETTER THAN YOUR MOM'S TURNOVERS
UTEP forced 28 turnovers from Morehead State, the most since 12/9/23 when Portland registered 31 turnovers against the Miners.
 
LETHAL LUISA
Luisa Vydrova poured in a game-high 18 points against the Eagles, one shy of a career high. She shot an incredible 75% from the field (9-12) while also pulling down seven rebounds.
 
TO THE POWER OF TEN(SAIE)
Ivane Tensaie scored in double figures for the second straight game, dropping 16 against Morehead State. She also drained three shots from beyond the arc in both contests.
 
THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
Mary Moses Amaniyo has led the team in rebounds in both contests this season, grabbing five in the Miners season opener against the Texans before bettering that number with eight against the Eagles.
 
SCOUTING REPORT: UTSA
The Roadrunners are 2-1 on the campaign, most recently picking up a 75-61 win over NM State Thursday (11/14). They are averaging 66.7 points, 34.0 rebounds, and 12.7 assists per game. UTSA is shooting 42.9 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from three, and 73.2 percent from the foul line. Jordyn Jenkins paces the team in both points (21.3) and rebounds (8.7) followed by Sidney Love with 13.0 and 4.7 in the same categories. Love ranks first on the squad in assists (6.3) and steals (2.7) while Nyayongah Gony swats a team-best 1.3 blocks per game. As a team, UTSA ranks 50th in the nation in three-point percentage (38.8) while two players are ranked in the top 100 individually. Jenkins sits seventh in the nation in double-doubles (two), 73rd in field goals (21), 10th in free throws made (21), and 31st in points per game (21.3). Love ranks 24th in assists per game (6.3), 45th in double doubles (one), and 75th in minutes per game (34.82).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE ROADRUNNERS
UTEP is 20-25 all-time against UTSA, with the most recent meeting ending in a 90-66 win for the Roadrunners in San Antonio.
