EL PASO, Texas – On the strength of
Paloma Hennicaux,
Carlotta Mencaglia,
Hanna Telzynska and
Wendy Zhang all picking up victories in singles and Mencaglia and Telzynska cruising in doubles, the Miner tennis team enjoyed a strong day of play at the UTEP Invitational at the El Paso Tennis Club on Saturday.
The Orange and Blue now sport a combined mark of 11-5 through two days of competition on their home courts. UTEP is 8-3 in singles and 3-2 in doubles at the tournament as it continues to excel across the board.
"We won five of seven matches today," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "So, it was another good day. I'm really proud of how we are fighting, and we hope to finish strong tomorrow."
Mencaglia and Telzynska set the tone for the day by dispatching Anna Pinaieva and Nadia Nemeth (NM State), 6-2.
Candice Bernier and
Zuzanna Szczepanska vied to make it a perfect mark in doubles, but the duo was bounced by Whitney Moon and Dora Kurdi (NM State), 6-2.
After a brief break, action swung into singles where the Miners took care of business by claiming four of the five matches. Mencaglia outlasted Christine Jevicky (Sam Houston), 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. Telzynska took down Adithi Venkata Krishnan (Sam Houston) with ease, 6-2, 6-1. Hennicaux matched her with a 6-2, 6-1, dismantling of Nemeth.
Zhang showed off her grit by holding off Montana Parkinson-Lubold (NM State), 7-6, 6-4. Szczepanska was clipped by Pinaieva, 6-1, 7-6.
UTEP will wrap up the tournament on Sunday. Doubles begins at 10, with singles action to follow.
