UTEP Tennis Continues To Compile Wins At CSUN Invitational

11/9/2024 6:55:00 PM

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Paloma Hennicaux, Carlotta Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska all picked up wins in singles while the respective pairings of Mencaglia and Telzynska and Candice Bernier and Hennicaux got the job done in doubles to highlight the action (5-4 record) for the UTEP tennis team on day two of the CSUN Invite.

All the matches in singles came against Pacific while the Miners challenged three different schools (Loyola Marymount, San Jose State and Youngstown State) in the trio of doubles contests.

"Today was another day of hard-fought matches," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We really battled on all the courts but made our lives a little complicated by not taking advantage of opportunities on too many courts. It was a team effort today, and we left everything we had out on the court. Tomorrow will be another hard day, but we are up for the challenge."

Hennicaux crushed Maggie Hoe, 6-2, 6-2, to set the tone in singles. Mencaglia pulled off a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, vanquishing of Milena Maiorova. Telzynska also demonstrated her toughness with a three-set win (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) by taking down Nahreen Cheam.

Bernier put up a good fight only to go down in three sets vs. Megan Carmichael, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Zuzanna Szczepanska was held off by Indiya McLeod, 6-4, 6-4. Wendy Zhang was bested by Katarina Brajovic, 6-1, 7-5.

Mencaglia and Telzynska worked their magic in the form of a 6-3 dismantling of Fiona Arrese and Kim-Michaela Zahraj (LMU). Bernier and Hennicaux smashed Yoana Dudova and Sarah Partida Garcia (Youngstown State), 6-1. Szczepanska and Zhang battled but ultimately succumbed at the hands of Cristina Mateos Losada and Duru Durgun (San Jose State), 7-5.

The Miners will wrap up play at the event, in addition to their fall season, when they take to the courts on Sunday. Competition at the tournament begins at 9 a.m. PT/10 a.m. MT.
