UTEP Women’s Basketball to Play at Sam Houston Saturday

HUNTSVILLE, Texas –
UTEP women's basketball (9-16, 4-8 CUSA) will travel to Huntsville, Texas to take on Sam Houston (7-17, 2-10 CUSA) in the second of two games this road trip. The Miners will try to shake off Thursday's 85-69 loss at LA Tech.
 
The Miners and Bearkats are slated for a 1:00 pm MT/ 2:00 pm CT start.

PREVIOUSLY ON
UTEP fell to 9-16, 4-8 in Conference USA Thursday after an 85-69 loss at LA Tech. The Miners shot 49.0 percent (25-51) from the floor, 40.0 percent (6-15) from beyond the arc, and 59.1 percent (13-22) from the charity stripe. They outrebounded the Lady Techsters 29-27, while tallying 11 assists, six steals, and two blocks. Jane Asinde led UTEP with 19 points and nine rebounds, followed by Ivane Tensaie with 17 and Mariama Sow with 12. Sow also grabbed six rebounds.
 
MARVELOUS MARIAMA
Mariama Sow had a career night against LA Tech. She set or matched career bests for multiple stats, including points (12), field goals (three), free throws made (five) and minutes (20).
 
SPLASH ZONE
Ivane Tensaie drained five threes against the Lady Techsters, all coming in the second half. It was the second time in three games that Tensaie has fit five shots from beyond the arc.
 
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Jane Asinde scored 19 points against LA Tech to lead all UTEP players. It was the 13th time this season that Asinde has paced the team in scoring.
 
HELPING HANDS
The Miners dished out 11 assists against the Lady Techsters, marking the 15th game this season they have recorded 10 or more dimes.
 
FEELIN' FINE AT THE FOUL LINE
UTEP is averaging 20.2 free throw attempts per game this season. That is good enough for second in conference and 38th in the nation.
 
HITTING THE BOARDS
The Miners outrebounded the Lady Techsters 29-27, the 16th time this season that the team has tied or outrebound opponents.
 
DEFENSIVE HUSTLE
Jane Asinde leads CUSA and ranks 28th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (6.9).
 
IN THE RANKS
Jane Asinde is putting up numbers that place her in the top 100 nationally in several categories. She leads CUSA in three categories, free throw attempts (164-15th), free throws (111-37th), and defensive rebounds per game (6.9-28th). She also sits second in the league in double doubles (10-39th), and third in both rebounds per game (9.2-52nd), and rebounds (220-66th).
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE QUEEN
Jane Asinde tallied her 10th double-double of the season after going for 15 points and a game-high 14 boards in limited action against WKU. She now has 51 career double-double, including 30 at the Division I level.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE THE TROUBLE
Erin Wilson has eight double doubles on the year. She is averaging 12.5 points and 8.2 rebounds this season, up from 6.6 points and 2.3 rebounds during the 2022-23 campaign.
 
A GRAND OL' TIME
Jane Asinde hit over 1,000 points in her D1 career after making a layup at the 7:01 mark of the second quarter vs. WKU. Asinde came into the contest needing only three points. She now has 1,039 career points going into the Sam Houston game. She compiled 657 points in her time with Wichita State to go along with 382 (and counting) while donning the Orange and Blue.
 
KEEPING IT 500
Keitha Adams grabbed win no. 500 as a head coach but not without drama. The Miners had to rally from 16 points down to defeat WKU 73-68 on Feb. 15, 2024. A total of 292 of those wins have come at the helm of the UTEP women's basketball program.
 
SCOUTING SAM HOUSTON
Sam Houston is 7-17 this season, and 2-10 in Conference USA. The Bearkats are averaging 66.8 points and 39.3 rebounds per game, while also tallying 11.1 assists, 9.1 steals, and 2.4 blocks. As a team, they lead conference and are second in the nation in both free throw attempts (25.79) and free throws made (17.62 per game. They also sit atop CUSA and fifth in the country in offensive rebounds per game (16.7) while leading the league and ranking 13th nationally in turnovers forced per game (21.12). Sam Houston also ranks second in conference, 71st in the NCAA in turnover margin (2.71), second in the league, 81st in the nation in steals per game (9.1), 3rd in CUSA, 62 in the country in bench points per game (22.3), and third in conference, 72nd nationally in rebounds per game (39.29).
 
Diana Rosenthal paces the team with 12.0 points a game, though she has not featured for the Bearkats since their contest against Liberty on 1/20/24. Sydnee Kemp follows closely behind, averaging 11.0 points, while Kaylee Jefferson sits third at 10.5. The final two leading scorers are Raanee Smith (9.8) and Kassidy Dixon (8.3). Smith leads the team in both rebounds (9.5) and blocks (1.5) per game while Jefferson tops the Bearkats in assists at 1.8. Dixon and Rosenthal share the team lead in steals at 1.5 apiece. Smith sits in the top 100 nationally in five categories. She leads Conference USA and ranks fourth nationally in offensive rebounds per game (5.0), sits second in conference, 44th in the nation in rebounds per game, and second in the league, 52nd in the country in rebounds (229). Smith also ranks third in CUSA, 80th in the NCAA in blocks per game (1.5), and is third in conference, 87th nationally in blocks (35).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE BEARKATS
UTEP is 3-0 all time against Sam Houston. Earlier in the 2023-24 campaign, the Miners defeated the Bearkats 66-61 at home on 1/27/24.
