UTEP Women’s Basketball Welcomes Jax State to the Don Haskins Center

EL PASO, Texas –
UTEP women's basketball (10-16, 5-8 CUSA) plays host to Jax State (10-15, 5-8 CUSA) on Thursday in the penultimate home game of the 2023-24 regular season. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. MT.

PREVIOUSLY ON
UTEP earned its first road victory of the season in an 82-66 wire-to-wire trouncing of Sam Houston last Saturday. With the win, the Miners improved to 10-16, including 5-8 in CUSA. UTEP tallied 46 rebounds, 17 assists, five steals, and three blocks in the contest. The Orange and Blue shot 50.0 percent (31-62) from the floor, 46.7 percent (7-15) from distance, and 76.5 percent (13-17) from the charity stripe. Five Miners scored in double figures, led by Jane Asinde with 22 points. Erin Wilson (16), Mahri Petree (13), Ivane Tensaie (11), and Luisa Vydrova (11) make up the other four. Asinde and Wilson both posted double doubles, grabbing 14 and 12 rebounds, respectively. Petree and Vydrova also grabbed seven boards apiece.
 
LINE DANCING
Jane Asinde went a perfect 8-8 from the foul line against the Bearkats. It was the fourth time she has shot 100.0 from the line this season and the eight made free throws equals her season best.
 
SPLASH ZONE
Ivane Tensaie has shot 50.0 percent (13-26) from long distance over the last four games.
 
CLOCKING IN
Mahri Petree put in a complete shift for the Miners against the Bearkats. She posted 13 points, seven rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one block. The seven boards mark a season best for Petree.
 
ALL A-BOARD
Luisa Vydrova put up 11 points and a career-best seven rebounds at Sam Houston.
 
LIGHTS OUT
Erin Wilson shot 80.0 percent (8-10) from the field against the Bearkats, posting 16 points with zero free throws.
 
FIERCE FIVE
UTEP had five players in double figures against Sam Houston, the second such occurrence in the 2023-24 campaign. The first happened in the Miners 95-88 win against Northern Alabama on 11/26/23.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE QUEEN
Jane Asinde tallied her 11th double-double of the season against Sam Houston, leading all players with 22 points and 14 rebounds. She now has 52 career double-double, including 31 at the Division I level.
 
DOUBLE-DOUBLE THE TROUBLE
Erin Wilson has nine double doubles on the year after a 16-point, 12-rebound performance against the Bearkats. She is averaging 12.2 points and 8.2 rebounds this season, up from 6.6 points and 2.3 rebounds in the 2022-23 campaign.
 
LEADING BY EXAMPLE
Jane Asinde scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds against Sam Houston to lead all players. It was the 14th time this season that Asinde has paced UTEP in scoring and 15th that she has led in rebounding.
 
HOW MAY WE ASSIST YOU?
The Miners dished out 17 assists against the Bearkats, which is the fourth most this season. It marked the 16th game this season they have recorded 10 or more dimes. Jane Asinde, Delma Zita, and Mahri Petree each tallied four dimes.
 
FEELIN' FINE AT THE FOUL LINE
UTEP is averaging 20.08 free throw attempts per game this season. That is good enough for second in conference and 41st in the nation.
 
SHARP SHOOTERS
The Miners shot an even 50.0 percent (31-62) from the field against the Bearkats. It was the sixth time this season they have recorded a 50.0 percent or better field goal percentage.
 
CRASHING THE BOARDS
UTEP outrebounded Sam Houston 46-29, the 17th time this season that the team has tied or outrebound opponents. The 46 rebounds mark the most this season by UTEP, and the +17 rebounding margin is the third most in the 2023-24 campaign.
 
DEFENSIVE HUSTLE
Jane Asinde leads CUSA and ranks 26th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (7.0).
 
IN THE RANKS
Two Miners are putting up numbers that place them in the top 100 nationally.   Jane Asinde leads CUSA in three categories, free throw attempts (172-14th), free throws (119-28th), and defensive rebounds per game (7.0-26th). She also sits second in an additional three, double doubles (11-39th), rebounds per game (9.4-48th), and rebounds (234-64th). Erin Wilson sits fifth in CUSA and 95th in the nation in rebounds per game (8.2).
 
SCOUTING JAX STATE
Jax State is 10-15 on the year and 5-8 in Conference USA. The Gamecocks are averaging 59.0 points and 37.5 rebounds per game. As a team, they are second in the league, 27th in the nation in bench points per game (25.5) while also sitting second in CUSA and ranking 69th in the country in fouls per game (15.0). Finally, Jax State tops conference and ranks 38th in the NCAA in three-point attempts per game (24.2). Bre'Anna Rhodes paces the Gamecocks with 8.2 points a game while sharing the lead in rebounding (4.8) with Keiara Griffin. Kristol Ayson (7.9), Griffin (6.6), Mya Barnes (6.4) and Rachel Johnson (5,8) round out the top five scorers. Elsie Harris leads the team in assists at 1.8, followed by Griffin and Ayson with 1.7 apiece. Ayson also ranks first on the team in assists (1.0) while Barnes leads in blocks (1.1). Rhodes is shooting a team-best 47.0 percent from the floor while Barnes paces the team beyond the arc at 39.1. Griffin has hit 90.0 percent (9-10) of her shots at the foul line, followed by Jaz Spencer at 87.5 percent (21-24).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE GAMECOCKS
The Miners are 0-1 all time against the Gamecocks. Earlier this season, UTEP fell to Jax State 70-62 in Jacksonville on 2/1/24.
