EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (5-13) cruised past Weatherford College, 7-0, at the El Paso Tennis Club Wednesday. The Miners, who were down multiple players due to injuries or illness, handled the lineup switches with ease. UTEP claimed every match contested.
Action commenced in doubles. The Miners' top tandem was sidelined, moving the other two units up a slot.
Carlotta Mencaglia and
Hanna Telzynska rallied past Carmine Becoude and Hoziane Kitambala, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles. The pair trailed, 5-2, before the big comeback.
Elena Dibattista and
DeCora Antoine blasted Sanja Djurdjevic and Tsitsi Claire Mahere, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles.
Veronika Lebisova and
Paloma Hennicaux won by default at No. 3 doubles.
The Orange and Blue were even more locked in during singles action. Lebisova handled Becoude, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Mencaglia derailed Kitambala, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Dibattista took out Djurdjevic, 6-1, 6-4. Hennicaux bested Claire Mahere, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4 singles while
Emma Stuart dropped a double bagel for the 6-0, 6-0, vanquishing of Baker at No. 5 singles. Antoine picked up a triumph by default at No. 6 singles.
The Miners will continue their three-match homestand by playing host to Liberty (13-5, 3-0 CUSA) at 10 a.m. MT on Friday. UTEP will conclude the regular season when it challenges I-10 rival NM State (5-12, 2-2 CUSA) on "Senior Day" at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday. Both matches will be held at the El Paso Tennis Club and admission is free of charge.
