UTEP T&F’s Morais Wins Javelin Event with Season-Best Throw at Mt. SAC Relays Thursday Night

WALNUT, Calif. – UTEP track and field's Arianne Morais hurled a season-best 57.26 meters (187-10) in the women's javelin throw elite for back-to-back titles at the 64th Annual Mt. SAC Relays in Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Thursday night. 
 
Morais hit the mark on her third attempt. It was the senior's second victory of the campaign but most importantly her best throw of the season. Morais finished ahead of UCLA's Federica Botter who posted 57.22 meters (187-8). Botter ranks fourth nationally (56.48m, 185-4). 
 
The native of Oslo, Norway, defended her title after she won the javelin with a 57.38-meter (188-3) mark at the 63rd Mt. SAC Relays on April 14, 2023. 
 
Morais entered the weekend in first place in Conference USA with a 54.18-meter (177-9) mark, while she ranks ninth nationally. She came up short of her personal best (57.61m, 189-0). Her mark ranks second in program history.
 
Nebraska's Rhema Otabor ranks first nationally at 58.47 meters (191-10), Texas A&M's Lianna Davidson ranks second (57.28m, 187-11) and TCU's Irene Jepkemboi ranks third (57.23m, 187-9). 
 
Morais won the Arizona Spring Break Fiesta (53.14m, 174-4), and placed fourth at the 96th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays (54.18m, 177-9).
 
COMING UP FRIDAY & SATURDAY
The weekend will continue with the Don Kirby Tailwind Open all day Friday. The field events will begin at 3:45 p.m. MT while the gun goes off for the races at 4:30 p.m. MT. 
 
Taking the track and field on Friday in Albuquerque for the men are Xavier Butler (100m, 200m), Stephen Carreto (400m H), Karon Dean (100m), Kevin Hewitt (400m), Joshua Hill (400m), Alek Hristov (shot put, discus, hammer), Noah Jirgens (hammer), Julio Pacheco Estrada (400m) and Aman Verma (100m, 200m). 
 
Competing on the women's side at the Don Kirby are Chinique Brown (100m, 200m), Niesha Burgher (100m, 200m, 400m), Lizbeth Fierro (shot put, hammer), Asia Hodge (100m, 200m), Thiaxi Melendez (400m H – unattached), Natalie J. Murillo (discus, hammer), Esther Osisike (shot put, discus, hammer), Alyssa Rosales (200m, 400m), Rejoice Sule (200m) and Paris Watson (discus). 
 
The Mt. SAC Relays continue Friday with Kenneth Talavera running in the 1500-meter event (8 p.m. MT), while Titus Cheruiyot will see action in the 5000-meter race (11:05 p.m. MT). On Saturday, Princess Uche will run the 400-meter dash (1:55 p.m. MT) and Loubna Benhadja will compete in the women's 400-meter hurdles (3:30 p.m. MT).
