EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (4-12) will lock up with former Conference USA rival UTSA (13-6) on the road at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT Saturday. It is the final regular-season road tilt for the Miners, who will be looking to hand the Roadrunners their first home setback (6-0) of the campaign.
UTSA has enjoyed a stellar season to date, earning its highest national ranking (No. 61) in program history earlier this campaign. The Roadrunners were ranked in consecutive weeks before dropping out, but they will prove to be a fierce foe for the Orange and Blue.
"We are ready to play a very strong UTSA team tomorrow," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "Not only have they been nationally ranked this Spring, but they have also had some really good wins. This is a great test for us before returning home to close out the regular season. We know we will be tested and are ready for a tough match."
UTEP split a pair of home matches last weekend, including handling perennial NJCAA power Seward County CC, 7-0, on March 29. Middle Tennessee managed to slip past the Miners, 4-1, last time out on March 30, but UTEP gained valuable experience in the match that can be deployed when facing UTSA.
Veronika Lebisova has won back-to-back matches in singles action, allowing her to equal
Carlotta Mencaglia and
Hanna Telzynska for the most victories (five) in dual play this year.
Zuzanna Szczepanska will also put a two-match winning streak in singles on the line in San Antonio.
Mencaglia and Telzynska continue to be the standout in doubles action. The duo has joined forces to win five straight matches to help compile an overall record of 16-11, including 10-4 in dual play.
Following the match with UTSA, the Orange and Blue will have a three-contest homestand to gear up for the 2024 CUSA Championships. UTEP will play host to Weatherford College at 10 a.m. MT on April 10, face Liberty at 10 a.m. MT on April 12 and challenge I-10 rival NM State on "Senior Day" at 12 p.m. MT on April 14.
