UTEP Tennis To Wrap Up Regular Season With Three-Match Homestand

4/9/2024 6:06:00 PM

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (4-13, 0-3 CUSA) will close out the regular season with a three-match homestand this week. The Miners will play host to Weatherford College at 10 a.m. MT on Wednesday, lock up with Liberty (13-5, 3-0 CUSA) at 10 a.m. MT on Friday and challenge I-10 rival NM State (5-12, 2-2 CUSA) on "Senior Day" at 12 p.m. MT on Sunday. All three matches will be held at the El Paso Tennis Club and admission is free of charge.

It will be an opportunity for the Orange and Blue to get a head of steam for the Conference USA Championships (April 18-21) hosted by FIU in Miami, Fla. The Miners will be looking to send out seniors Elena Dibattista and Veronika Lebisova in style, in addition to breaking into the win column for league play.

"It's hard to believe we are down to our last three matches of the regular season," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "It's great to finish at home with some good competition before heading to the CUSA championships next week at FIU. We have had more downs than ups this Spring with all the injuries and illnesses, and they continue to follow us for these three matches as well. We have learned a lot this Spring. I know it will make us stronger going forward. On Sunday we will recognize our two great seniors, Veronika Lebisova and Elena DiBattista. I can't believe these last four years have gone so fast. They have made a lasting impression on UTEP Tennis and will be missed."

UTEP has used a balanced approach in singles, with four different Miners (Paloma Hennicaux, Lebisova, Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska) all boasting five wins in dual play. Overall, it's the freshman Telzynska who has produced a team-high 13 victories in singles. Lebisova (11) and Hennicaux (10) have also hit double figures. Lebisova and Zuzanna Szczepanska enter with some momentum, with each riding a two-match winning streak.

Mencaglia and Telzynska have teamed up to take care of business in doubles. The duo has been dominant in the Spring season, producing a mark of 10-5. Overall, the pair has compiled 16 triumphs on the campaign. Lebisova and Szczepanska are also in double figures for total victories as a duo (10-12).

UTEP has come on strong lately, with three wins (two at home) in the month of March.
