LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The UTEP tennis team put the finishing touches of an incredible weekend of action by going 4-2 in singles against NM State and sweeping the doubles play vs. WNMU on the final day of the NM State Aggie Invitational Sunday.
The Miners concluded the season-opening fall tournament with a combined mark of 20-7, with
Hanna Telzynska and
Candice Bernier going undefeated in both singles and doubles to lead the way over three days of competition.
"I am so proud of this team after our first tournament," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "This was a total team effort. We played with a lot of heart and energy all three days. We still have work to do, but we are heading in the right direction and are getting better every day."
UTEP made quick work of the Mustangs in doubles, cruising to convincing victories in all three matches.
Carlotta Mencaglia and Telzynska drilled Gabriella Blumberg and Manon Baudet, 6-2.
Zuzanna Szczepanska and Bernier derailed Varvara Nikolaeva (NM State) and Jenna Kastell (WNMU), 6-2.
Wendy Zhang and
Paloma Hennicaux crushed Lucia Carmena and Andreea Arnautu, 6-1.
The attention then switched to singles where the Orange and Blue were afforded the opportunity to challenge the homestanding Aggies. The Miners were up to the task, staking four of the six matches. Szczepanska rallied for an impressive 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, vanquishing of Lisa Zhu. Bernier made quick work of Montana Parkinson-Lubold, 6-3, 6-4.
Hennicaux was locked in during a 6-1, 6-3, victory against Whitney Moon while Telzynska outlasted Nadia Nemeth, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. Mencaglia was tripped up by Anna Pinaieva, 6-3, 6-4, and Zhang fell to Dora Kurdi, 6-1, 6-2.
UTEP will look to build on the momentum from this weekend by partaking in the ACU Invitational from Sept. 27-29.
