EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team fell to former Conference USA rival and unbeaten UTSA, 4-0, at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday. The match was played in clinch format.  
 
"UTSA is a tough opponent, but we certainly had some shortcomings," UTEP associate head coach Joanna Furdyna said. "We will be working hard for the next few weeks towards improvement."
 
The match commenced in doubles where the Miners (1-1) put up a good fight, but the Roadrunners (4-0) were able to take two courts to snag the early lead. Carlotta Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska went down swinging, 6-4, at the hands of Ekua Youri and Valeria Sanchez at No. 2 doubles. Zuzanna Szczepanska and Candice Bernier were clipped by Letizia Corsini and Vittoria Baccino, 6-3, at the top slot. Wendy Zhang and DeCora Antoine were locked up in a good one (4-5) when it went unfinished with Arina Babenko and Natalia Guerrero.
 
UTEP tried to regroup for singles play only to have the visitors stake a trio of triumphs to clinch the match. Candice Bernier was upended by Youri, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Telzynska was knocked off by Baccino, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles while Szczepanska fell to Babenko, 6-1, 6-0.
 
Mencaglia went unfinished (2-6, 3-5) with Corsini at the No. 1 position as did Hennicaux against Sanchez, 6-7, 0-1 at No. 4 singles. Zhang didn't complete her match either, with things called at 6-4, 1-2.
