EL PASO, Texas – Carlotta Mencaglia pushed her record to 5-0 at No. 1 singles while Wendy Zhang and DeCora Antoine also picked up victories in singles to help the UTEP tennis team take down Lamar, 4-0, at the El Paso Tennis Club Sunday. The Miners (4-2) won the doubles point as well in a dominant performance against the Cardinals (2-6) while wrapping up the season-opening homestand on a high note.
 
With the victory, the Orange and Blue are off to their best start through six matches in dual play since also forging a mark of 4-2 at this juncture in 2014-15.
 
"We played with a lot of energy today," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We played with intensity and got the doubles point. We knew the singles were going to be a battle, and it was. I'm very proud of how these girls fought today, and it was a great way to finish this six-match homestand."
 
Mencaglia and Hanna Telzynska dispatched Megan Do and Asta Miettinen, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles. Zhang and Antoine bounced Martina Alcaino and Savannah Bijlsma, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles. The match at No. 2 doubles went unfinished with the team point decided.
 
Mencaglia won for the fifth time in as many matches since the onset of dual season, blasting Gudovskaya, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 singles. All five of those outcomes have been in straight sets, including a pair of victories this week.
 
Zhang marched to 4-1 win at No. 5 singles by taking apart Bijlsma, 6-3, 6-3. Antoine also was locked in with a 6-2, 7-5, triumph against Emma Palus at No. 6 singles. The other three matches were unfinished with clinch format in place.
 
UTEP will be in action with a pair of matches next weekend, playing at Tarleton State on Feb. 21 before locking up at Abilene Christian on Feb. 23.
