RENO, Nev. – The UTEP men's cross country team finished in sixth place in the 8K while the women's squad placed eighth in the 6K at the 2026 Mountain West Cross Country Championships on Friday at the Washoe County Golf Course.
Nathan Kapel was the top finisher on the men's side, placing 17th overall with a time of 24:17.8. Freshman Ashlyn McMillan was 43rd overall on the women's side with a time of 22:28.9.
"I'm proud of the way our men and women competed today in our first Mountain West Cross Country Championships. We knew coming into this conference that the level of competition would be strong, and today was another opportunity for us to see where we stand and what it will take to continue moving this program forward," UTEP head coach Francesca Green said. "Our men finished sixth, just a few points shy of fifth place, and I thought they showed a lot of fight and determination. While we know there were opportunities to finish higher, I'm encouraged by the progress this group continues to make. On the women's side, we finished eighth, and although we have areas where we need to improve, I was proud of the toughness and effort they showed throughout the race. I also want to recognize our seniors and team captains, Salma and Juan, for their leadership and commitment to this program. They continue to set an example for their teammates, and that leadership is an important part of what we're building. There are always lessons to take away from championship competition, both good and bad. We have to be willing to learn from those moments and continue raising our expectations. We're building something here at UTEP, and while we're not where we ultimately want to be, I believe we're moving in the right direction. Now our focus shifts to the NCAA Regional Championships in two weeks. We have another opportunity to compete, and our goal is to take what we learned today and be even better the next time we step on the course."
New Mexico won the men's team title with 15 points, while the Lobos also took the women's team championship with 19 points. UNM's Evans Kiplagat won the men's individual championship with a time of 22:54.3. The Lobos had the top seven finishers in the event. Pamela Kosgei took the women's title with a time of 18:49.4.
Rounding out the Miner men, Juan Leal (24:43.4) was 25th, Paul Rotich (25:47.8) was 43rd, Carmelo Corral (25:55.1) was 47th, Israel Quintana (26:02.3) was 49th, Julian Franco (26:11.6) was 52nd, Sebastian Mendez (26:46.9) was 61st, Jacob Yeager (26:54.1) was 62nd, and Ameen Ibrahim (27:28.3) was 68th.
Salma Licon (23:02.0) was 52nd, Mia Hairston (23:43.3) was 63rd, Brenda Jerop (23:54.3) was 69th, Sofia Ramirez (24:29.1) was 71st, Kissleine Casarez (24:37.1) was 73rd, Aubrey Arsenault (25:13.9) was 77th, and Vallary Kiplagat (25:57.8) placed 78th to round out the women's finishers.
"Our women ran strong. Ashlyn continues to improve and impress. Salma and Vallary battled through injuries, and ultimately we finished where we were seeded," UTEP assistant coach Justin Herbert said. "On the men's side, we felt like we were a bit overlooked. Nathan and Juan came through with strong races and we were able to outperform our ranking. It wasn't our best performance, but I think it showed these men that we are getting closer and closer to where we want to be."
