DAY 1 RESULTS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UTEP track and field team recorded 16 personal bests on the first day of action at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Seven Miners set personal bests in the men's 200-meter dash, led by Timothy Grice and Mathew Polk. Grice and Polk clocked in personal-best times of 21.36, tying for 24th overall of 62 competitors. Deondre McIntosh (21.49), Elijah Munoz (21.52), Amari Taylor (21.71), Joseph Gomez Whitten (22.16), and Joshua Ford (22.27) all set PR's in the 200.

On the women's side, Cydni Martin clocked in a personal-best time of 24.09 and finished 22nd overall of 65 runners in the 200. Londyn Colon (24.39), Amai Newman (24.53), and Madison Evans (26.02) also turned in their best times.

Juan Leal finished second overall in the men's mile, clocking in at 4:12.91. It was his best career finish. Also in the mile event, Carmelo Corral (4:25.66) and Paul Rotich (4:26.90) had personal-best times.

Salma Licon clocked in a PR of 5:19.89 in the women's mile.

Andrea Castillo (2:28.24) and Evan Avitia (1:56.15) each turned in personal bests in their respective 800-meter events.

"It was a great first day for us. We had about 16 personal best performances, and that shows our athletes are trusting their preparation and competing the right way. The sprinters stepped up, the distance crew delivered, and it was exciting to see our women in the multis make their debut and represent the program well," first-year UTEP Head Coach Francesca Green said. "We're building momentum, but we're not satisfied. Tomorrow is another opportunity to raise our level, stay locked in on the details, and keep pushing ourselves closer to where we want to be when championship season arrives."

Saturday will begin with the conclusion of the multis at 9:20 a.m. Saturday's field events will start at 10:30 a.m. with the women's shot put, and the track events go off at 10 a.m.
