Trio of Miners Win Gold on Day 3 at the C-USA T&F Championships Saturday

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Aleks Hristov and Krishna Jayasankar Menon claimed gold in the discus early in the day and Karoline Daland capped day three with a gold-medal finish in the 3000-meter steeplechase at the 2022 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at UTSA Park West Athletics Complex on Saturday. 
 
Daland, a few weeks after breaking the UTEP track and field program record in the 3000-meter steeplechase, set the stadium mark with a time of 10:39.17. In Saturday's final event, Daland literally ran away with the race, beating out Charlotte's Alina Rovnak (10:52.65) and Lauren Johnston (10:52.96). Daland was also the first ever female Miner to win the 3000-steeple at the C-USA Championships. 
 
Hristov unleashed a mark of 54.91 meters (180-02) on his first throw to win gold in his sophomore season after winning bronze in last year's championships.
 
Jayasankar Menon hit her personal best with a toss of 50.02 meters (164-01) on her fourth attempt. She didn't foul any of her six throws. 

Maurice Westmoreland finished in sixth place in the men's discus with a personal-best mark of 51.15-meter toss, while Benjamin Coronado (49.48m) placed seventh. The UTEP men earned 15 points in the men's discus. Jakub Belik (2.00m) and Emilio Rios (1.95m) earned nine points with fourth and fifth-places finishes, respectively.

The Miners earned 24 points on Saturday and have tallied 35 total points through three days. Rice (92 points), Charlotte (75.5) and UTSA (36) rank ahead of UTEP. 

On the women's side, the Miners have 23 points. Rice (37), Charlotte (31), UTSA (28) and Middle Tennessee (27) ranks ahead of UTEP.

ADVANCING TO SUNDAY'S FINALS
In the track preliminaries, Kenneth Talavera (3:51.10), Daniel Bernal (3:52.08) and Yusuf Mohamud (3:56.10) advanced to the men's 1500-meters finals on Sunday. Talavera finished second in heat two and third overall in the prelims. Bernal finished third in heat two and fifth overall.
 
On the women's side, Carolyne Chepkosgei (4:33.10) and Daland (4:35.45) advanced to the women's 1500. Chepkosgei won heat one, while finished first overall. Daland placed fourth in heat one and seventh overall. 
 
Maribel Caicedo (13.17) and Marissa Simpson (14.02) will compete in Sunday's 100-meter hurdles final. Caicedo won heat two and finished first overall, clocking in a personal best time, while Simpson placed ninth overall. 
 
Jevaughn Powell won heat one and finished first overall in the men's 400-meter dash (46.82), and will run Sunday's final. Powell will also race the 200-meter final after finishing third overall and first in heat three. 
 
In the men's 100-meter dash, Dennis Johnson (10.38) and Karon Dean (10.39) advanced to Sunday's final. Johnson finished fifth overall and Dean sixth.
 
Danae McFarlane qualified for the women's 100 final on Sunday, placing seventh overall with a time of 11.84. She also advanced to Sunday's 200-meter final (24.23) after finishing seventh overall in the prelims. 
 
In the men's 800, Maxwell Kipkosgei (1:52.91), Kenneth Talavera (1:53.54) and Yusuf Mohamud (1:53.67) will compete in Sunday's finals. Kipkosgei finished first overall, while Talavera placed sixth and Mohamud ninth. 
 
Chepkosgei advanced to the women's 800 after placing second overall and first in heat one (2:09.28). 
 
A trio of Miners will run the men's 400-meter hurdles final on Sunday. Ned Azemia (52.04) won heat two and placed second overall, while Ronaldo Griffiths (53.37) and Stephen Carreto (53.58) also advanced. 
 
On the women's side, Loubna Benhadja (1:00.18) finished sixth overall to advance to Sunday's women's 400-meter hurdles race.
 
FINAL DAY OF EVENTS
Sunday's final day will start at 1 p.m. CT/Noon MT with the men's shot put, while the running events will start at 6 p.m. CT/5 MT with the men's 4x100-meter relay.
