UTEP Men’s Golf Tees off Season at the Gene Miranda Friday

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP men's golf team will tee off the 2022-23 season at the 53^rd Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Friday. The tournament is a three-day, 24-team, 54-hole event at the Eisenhower Golf Club (par 72 | 7,541 yards) at the Air Force Academy in Colorado.

Friday and Saturday's tee times begin at 8:30 a.m. MT, while Sunday's final round will start at 7:30 a.m. MT. The Miners will start at 10:10 a.m. MT on Friday morning.

The Miners will compete against host Air Force, Boston College, Cal Baptist, Cal Poly, Cal State-Northridge, Colorado, Colorado State, Denver, Dixie State, Idaho, Murray State, NM State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, San Jose State, SIU-Edwardsville, South Dakota, Southern Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley, Weber State, Wofford, and Wyoming.

Competing for the Miners are Max Schliesing (10:10 a.m. MT), Damon Vilkauskas (10:20 a.m.), Jacob Presutti (10:30 a.m.), Greg Holmes (10:40 a.m.) and Marcus Khaw (10:50 a.m.). All five will tee off on hole no. 1 as UTEP will be paired with Idaho, Dixie State and Cal Baptist.

UTEP'S HISTORY IN THE GENE MIRANDA
The Miners tied for first with UNLV in 2016, shooting 863. UTEP last won the event as lone champions came in 2002 (864). UTEP's Dan Swanson won the 2002 individual title, shooting 210, 6-under par. Last season, UTEP finished eighth (871).

ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT
The Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational is in its 53rd season. Formerly known as the Rocky Mountain Invitational and the Pikes Peak Invitational, the event was re-named the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in 2003 to honor the legendary coach who headed up the Air Force program for 25 years and is a member of the Air Force Athletics' Hall of Fame.

EISENHOWER BLUE COURSE
The Blue Course of the Eisenhower Golf Club opened in the 1959 and is named after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who took part in the dedication ceremony. The 7,541-yard, par-72 course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and was ranked as the third best military course in the nation (PGA.com) and the 24th best college course (Golf Week) in the country. The Silver Course, designed by an excellent Colorado architect, Frank Hummel, is the newer of the two Eisenhower courses. It is shorter than the Blue Course but makes up for its lack of length with fast, tricky greens, narrow fairways, and many hazards. It is built in a beautiful setting, with many spectacular mountain views and a view of the cadet chapel. The course, a par 72 with no out-of-bounds, compliments the Blue Course very well because it requires more accuracy than length off the tee.

2021 RESULTS
UC Davis won the team competition with a tournament record 831 (-33). Nevada was second (855) and Denver third (856). UCD's Thomas Hutchison won the individual title with a tournament record 201 (-15).
