UTEP Men’s Golf in Fourth Place at John A. Burns in Hawai’i

FIRST ROUND RESULTS

LIHUE, KAUA'I – The UTEP men's golf team opened the spring season with a solid performance on the links as the Miners are in fourth place through 27 holes at the 2023 John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Ocean Course at Hōkūala (par 72 | 6,905 yards) on Thursday.
 
Due to heavy rain in the forecast on Friday, it was agreed upon by the coaches to start the second round following the conclusion of the first 18 holes on Thursday afternoon.
 
The second round will continue Friday at 8:30 a.m. HST/11:30 a.m. MT, weather permitting. The tournament is expected to conclude on Saturday.

Thru 27 holes, Marcus Khaw (-7) is tied for fifth overall out of over 125 competitors. Max Schliesing (-5) is tied for 14th, while Greg Holmes (-3) is tied 22nd. Jacob Presutti (+3) – thru 10 holes – is tied 82nd and freshman El Paso product Ryan Lewis made his collegiate debut. 
 
Overall, BYU (-23) tops the team leaderboard thru 9-10. Arizona (-22) sits in second place thru 9-11 while New Mexico (-14) is third thru 9-10. 
 
Long Beach State's Ian Gilligan (-11) leads the player leaderboard while UNM's Bastien Amat is ranked second. BYU's Keanu Akina (-9) and Davind Timmins (-8) round out the top four. Khaw is 
 
The Miners fired a 6-under 282 in the first round, tying fifth with New Mexico. BYU led at 15-under 273, while Cal (277) was second and Long Beach State (278) tied third with Arizona. 
 
Khaw led the Miners, ranking tied seventh overall after 18 and firing a 5-under 67, while Holmes ranked tied 14th after shooting a 3-udner 69. Schliesing concluded round one tied for 18th after a 2-under-70 effort. 
 
Overall, Khaw has tallied nine birdies (t-7th), while Schliesing registered seven. UTEP recorded 83 pars and 27 birdies. Utah (100) leads the pars, while Arizona (40) the birdies and Santa Clara (five) the eagles.
