UTEP’s Khaw Places Top 10 at Desert Mountain Collegiate Sunday

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The UTEP men's golf team finished outside of the top 10, while Marcus Khaw tied for seventh place at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate hosted by Michigan at Desert Mountain's Outlaw Course (par 72 | 7,107 yards) in Scottsdale, Ariz., on Sunday afternoon.

The Miners (297-305-304) finished 12^th after shooting a 906. No. 22 Mississippi State won the team title after shooting 2-over par 866 (283-293-290). Host Michigan (293-286-296) and no. 42 Little Rock (296-285-294) tied for second, shoot 11-over par 875. DePaul finished in last place (+69, 303-318-312—933).

Khaw carded a 2-over par 218 (71-72-75) and tied seventh out of 93 student-athletes. The redshirt senior registered his second top-10 showing this season, while also finishing as the top Miner for the third time during the campaign. Khaw shot 4 under on par 5 holes. He tallied 33 pars and 10 birdies.

Kristjan Burkelca registered nine birdies, and eagled hole no. 16 (par 5, 532 yards) during Friday's round one action.

Mississippi State's Ruan Pretorius jumped out with a first-place tie after round one with a 68, and never looked back after firing a 70 in the second round. Pretorius took home the individual title after firing an 8-under par 208 (68-70-70). Little Rock's Matteo Cristoni placed second at 5-under par 211 (69-72-70). NM State's Aidan Thomas (72-68-74) and Santa Clara's Viraj Garewal (70-70-74) each shot a 2-under 214 to tie for third place.

Pretorius, Cristoni, Thomas and Garewal were the only competitors to shoot under par during the 54-hole tournament.

The Miners will head to the northwest to compete at the Duck Invitational on March 27-28 in Eugene, Ore., hosted by University of Oregon.
