UTEP Men’s Golf Climbs Eight Spots, Finishes Ninth at Wyoming Cowboy Classic

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The UTEP men's golf team, after penciling the third-best score in the third round, finished in ninth place at the 2023 Wyoming Cowboy Classic hosted by Wyoming at The Cattail Course at Whirlwind Golf Club at Wild Horse Pass (par 72 | 7,334 yards) in Chandler, Ariz., on Tuesday.

The Miners (289-299-289) shot an 877, including a 289 in the third round to shoot up eight spots. UTEP finished with its sixth top-10 finish of the season.

UTEP's third-round score was third behind team champion no. 28 San Diego State which shot a 281 and Long Beach State's 287. Overall, the Aztecs (285-291-281) fired a 7-under par 857 to win the team title, while Kansas (272-294-292) finished one stroke behind at 6-under par 858. No. 50 Missouri (279-286-298) placed third at 1-under par 863.

Greg Holmes (74-71-73) finished as the top Miner for the first time in his career. Holmes shot 2-over par 218 and tied for 25^th overall after shooting up 10 spots on the leaderboard.

Jacob Presutti (71-78-70—219) finished tied for 29^th, while Max Schliesing (76-73-72—221) placed tied for 38^th. Marcus Khaw (68-80-74—222) got off to a fast start with his first-round score, but followed with an 80 in the second. Freshman Ryan Lewis (78-77-78) competed in his second tournament of the season.

UTEP led the field with 171 pars, while recording 38 birdies.

Long Beach State's no. 22 Ian Gilligan (70-67-66) won the individual title at 13-under par 203. Loyola Marymount's Riley Lewis (69-65-70) finished second at 12-under par 204, while Pacific's Petr Janik (67-72-70) placed third at 7-under par 209.

UTEP will conclude the regular season at the Tunica National Intercollegiate hosted by Arkansas State on April 17-18. The Conference USA Championship is set for April 24-27 in Texarkana, Ark., at Texarkana Country Club.
