UTEP T&F Combines for Four PRs at SMU Invitational, Friday Night

5/1/2026 9:30:00 PM

DALLAS – UTEP's Cydni Martin headlined the evening with a personal-best time of 23.41 in the women's 200-meter dash as the Miners completed the first day of competition at the SMU Invitational in Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium on Friday night.

Martin finished second out of 56 competitors in the 200. The freshman's previous best was 23.48 at the Miners Invitational in March. Coming into the weekend, Martin ranked tied for third in the 200 in CUSA. Liberty's Iyana Sherard was second with a time of 23.53.

"We had a good first day of competition at the SMU Invitational with some strong performances across the board, including four personal bests on the day. We got things started with a big PR from Cydni Martin in the 200 meters, running 23.41, which was a great way to set the tone for the day," first-year UTEP head coach Francesca Green said. "We also closed out the day on a strong note with Israel Quintana running a personal best in the 5,000 meters at 15:11.66. It's always good to see that kind of effort to finish the day. Overall, it was a solid start for our group, and we're looking forward to building on that momentum as we head into day two."

Addison Stricklin (24.16, seventh), Juantai-Shay Williams (24.25, eighth), and Oghenekaro Brume (24.28, ninth) rounded out the top 10 finishers.

In the men's 200, Elias Munoz (21.56) finished sixth of 43 sprinters. Timothy Grice (21.62) was ninth. Kalix Robinson clocked a personal-best 21.81.

Braela Sargent leaped a personal-best 5.38 meters (17-8) in the women's long jump.

Israel Quintana wrapped up the evening with a personal-best time of 15:11.66, placing fourth of 12 runners in the men's 5000-meter.

Saturday's field events begin at 8:30 a.m. CT/7:30 MDT with the men's javelin, followed by the running events at noon CT/11 a.m. MDT with the women's 4x100-meter relay. The meet will wrap up at 4:35 p.m. CT/3:35 MDT with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
