UTEP Athletics Now Accepting Flo Hyman Award Nominations Through January 20, 2026

12/10/2025 9:06:00 AM

EL PASO – UTEP Athletics is proud to announce that nominations are now open for the annual Flo Hyman Award, recognizing exceptional young women in the El Paso community. Submissions will be accepted through Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026.

The recipients will be honored as part of UTEP's celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Thursday, Feb. 5, when the UTEP women's basketball team hosts LA Tech at 7 p.m. MT in the Don Haskins Center.

During a special halftime ceremony, three outstanding local student-athletes—one each from the elementary, middle school, and high school levels—will be awarded for excellence in athletics, academics, leadership, and community involvement. This recognition serves as a meaningful opportunity to highlight the significant impact these young women are making both on and off the field.

The award is named in memory of Flo Hyman, a legendary American volleyball player and passionate advocate for gender equality in sports. Hyman's remarkable athletic career and her commitment to advancing opportunities for women continue to inspire generations. She passed away unexpectedly in 1986 due to Marfan syndrome, a condition she was unaware that she had, but her legacy remains deeply influential in women's athletics nationwide.

Community members are encouraged to nominate deserving candidates who embody Hyman's spirit, strength, and dedication.
