UTEP T&F’s Jirgens Sets PR in Hammer, Leal in 1500 as Miners Wrap Up Competition at the Beach Invitational & Bryan Clay Invitational Friday

LONG BEACH, Calif. – UTEP track and field senior thrower Noah Jirgens recorded a personal-best 60.52-meter (198-6) toss in the men's hammer throw as the Miners concluded competition at Long Beach State's Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Track on Friday afternoon. Juan Leal clocked in a personal-best 3:47.07 in the men's 1500-meter run at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational at Cougar Stadium late Friday night. 
 
Jirgens finished in 12th place of 52 throwers. A day before, Jirgens had tied his personal best with a 59.46-meter (195-1) mark in the hammer throw at the Pacific Coast Invitational. Jirgens entered the weekend ranked sixth in Conference USA with a mark of 59.46 meters. 
 
Leal finished first in heat 10 and 20th overall out of over 120 runners in the 1500. Leal's previous best was 3:53.20 and ranked seventh heading into the meet. The freshman's new time will move him into the top four in CUSA.  
 
Sebastian Avena won the men's 400-meter dash open with a time of 48.38. The freshman was first out of 22 competitors. 
 
Sarah Dovenbarger finished in third place out of 14 competitors in the women's pole vault open. The freshman recorded a mark of 3.65 meters (11-11.75). 
 
COMING UP SATURDAY
Competing at Long Beach State's Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Track on the women's side are Chinique Brown (400, 4x400), Lizbeth Fierro (shot put), Samahdi Foster (400H, 4x400), Denae McFarlane (100, 4x100), Natalie J. Murillo (discus), Samoya Neil (100, 4x100), Esther Osisike (shot put, discus), Alla Parnov (pole vault), Cailee Phillips (400H), Addison Stricklin (100, 200, 4x100), Rejoice Sule (100, 4x100, 4x400) and Princess Uche (400, 4x400).
 
On the men's side at the Beach Invitational are Sebastian Avena (4x400), Jakub Belik (high jump), Oleksandr Blonskyi, Harrison Canfield (pole vault), Stephen Carreto (400H, 4x400), Joseph Gomez Whitten (100), Hill (400, 4x400), Aleks Hristov (shot put, discus), A'tiq Muhammad (100), Julio Pacheco Estrada (400, 4x400), Xavier Westmoreland (discus) and Amir Williams (110H).
 
A trio of Miners will see action at the 65th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Loubna Benhadja (400H), Marissa Simpson (100H) and Jordani Woodley (110H) will compete in the elite division of their respective events at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Saturday.
