UTEP Track & Field Set to Compete at the New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque Jan. 31-Feb. 1

EL PASO – The UTEP track and field team will compete in its second meet of the season at the New Mexico Team Open in the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday and Saturday. 
 
Friday's running and field events will begin at 3 p.m. MT. Saturday's field events will commence at 10 a.m. MT and then the gun goes off for the running events at 10:30 a.m.
 
"I'm hoping to see meaningful improvement from everybody who made the trip," UTEP Director of Track & Field Mika Laaksonen said, "A nasty injury bug is ravishing the team at the moment, and that's a serious concern."

Competing for the women's squad are Loubna Benhadja (400, 4x4), Chinique Brown (200, 400, 4x4), Oghenekaro Brume (400, 4x4), Niesha Burgher (60, 200, 4x4), Praise Djoma (triple jump), Sarah Dovenbarger (pole vault), Ewa Peace (high jump), Lizbeth Fierro (shot put, weight throw), Bobbie Guillen (mile), Asia Hodge (60, 200), Brenda Jerop (3000), Ruth Jerubet (3000), Vallary Kiplagat (3000), Denae McFarlane (60), Natalie J. Murillo (weight throw), Samoya Neil (200, long jump), Esther Osisike (shot put, weight throw), Alla Parnov (pole vault), Cailee Phillips (400), Marissa Simpson (60, 60H, 4x4), Taylor Starkey (pole vault), Addison Stricklin (60, 200, 4x4), Rejoice Sule (60, 200, 4x4) and Princess Uche (400, 4x4). 
 
Simpson ranks first in Conference USA and third nationally in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best 8.02 at the Texas Tech Corky Classic. Sule (200), Burgher (400), Parnov (pole vault), Neil (long jump) and Djoma (triple jump) rank first in CUSA in their respective events. 
 
Peace is making her collegiate debut, while Guillen, Hodge and Phillips will compete in their first meet of the season. Phillips, an El Paso native and Franklin High School graduate, makes her UTEP debut after competing at ORU as freshman in 2024. 
 
Going for the men are Evan Avitia (800), Jakub Belik (high jump), Oleksandr Blonskyi (pole vault, shot put), Alex Brown (triple jump), Harrison Canfield (pole vault), Stephen Carreto (400), Joshua Hill (400), Aleks Hristov (shot put, weight throw), Noah Jirgens (weight throw), Maxwell Kipkosgei (800), Juan Leal (mile), Zion Meaders (400),  A'tiq Muhammad (long jump), Julio Pacheco Estrada (400), Israel Quintana (3000), Paul Rotich (mile), Kenneth Talavera (mile), Aron Tanui (800, mile), Seth Truax (800), Zacarias Velasquez (60, long jump), Amir Williams (60, 60H) and Jordani Woodley (60, 60H). 
 
Belik ranks tied for 27th nationally in the high jump with a 2.12-meter leap. In CUSA, Belik (high jump), Pacheco Estrada (400) and Talavera (3000) rank first.
 
Muhammad, Quintana and Velasquez are making their season debuts, while Rotich will compete in his first collegiate meet.
