UTEP T&F’s Carreto Sets PR in 400 Hurdles as Miners Wrap Up Competition at Long Beach State’s Pacific Coast Invitational Thursday

LONG BEACH, Calif. – UTEP track and field senior hurdler Stephen Carreto clocked in a personal-best 52.40 on the men's 400-meter hurdles as the Miners concluded competition at Long Beach State's Pacific Coast Invitational at Jack Rose Track on Thursday. 
 
Carreto finished in third place of 27 competitors in the 400 hurdles with a new time of 52.40. Carreto entered the weekend ranked eighth in the men's 400 hurdles with a 54.21. The senior's new personal best would rank second in Conference USA. His previous best time was 53.16 at the 2022 CUSA OTF Championships. 
 
Loubna Benhadja clocked in a season-best 57.88 and won the women's 400-meter hurdles. Benhadja ranked first in CUSA coming into the meet with a 58.24.
 
Esther Osisike hurled a new personal best in the women's outdoor shot put at 14.53 meters (47-8). Osisike entered the weekend ranked fourth in the shot put with a 14.17m (46-6). Osisike's previous best mark was 14.35m (47-1) at the 2024 CUSA OTF Championships. 
 
Noah Jirgens tied his personal best with a 59.46-meter (195-1) mark in the men's hammer throw. 
 
Aleks Hristov set his season-best mark in the men's discus throw with a 55.78-meter (183-0) toss. Hristov entered the weekend ranked third in CUSA with a 54.20m (177-10). 
 
Marissa Simpson won the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.07 (2.2). 
 
Joshua Hill finished in second place with a time of 47.93, and Sebastian Avena was fifth with a 48.09 in the men's 400-meter dash out of 47 sprinters. 
 
A'tiq Muhammad, currently a cornerback on the UTEP football team, made his season debut and took second place out of 38 leapers in the men's long jump with a 7.36-meter (24-1.75) mark. 
 
Princess Uche placed second of 30 runners in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 55.34. 
 
Jakub Belik won the men's high jump with a 2.10-meter (6-10.75) leap. 
 
Rejoice Sule won the women's 200-meter dash (of 72 competitors) with a 23.37 (0.8).
 
COMING UP FRIDAY & SATURDAY
Vallary Kiplagat, Juan Leal, and Aron Tanui will compete in the 1500 at Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational in Cougar Athletic Stadium on Friday.
 
Heading to Long Beach State's Beach Invitational at Jack Rose Track on the women's side are Chinique Brown (400, 4x400), Praise Djoma (long jump), Sarah Dovenbarger (pole vault), Peace Ewa (high jump), Lizbeth Fierro (hammer), Samahdi Foster (400H, 4x400), Denae McFarlane (100, 4x100), Natalie J. Murillo (discus, hammer), Samoya Neil (100, 4x100), Esther Osisike (shot put, discus), Alla Parnov (pole vault), Cailee Phillips (400H), Addison Stricklin (100, 200, 4x100), Rejoice Sule (100, 4x100, 4x400) and Princess Uche (400, 4x400).
 
On the men's side at the Beach Invitational are Sebastian Avena (400, 4x400), Jakub Belik (high jump), Oleksandr Blonskyi (pole vault), Alex Brown (long jump, triple jump), Harrison Canfield (pole vault), Stephen Carreto (400H, 4x400), Joseph Gomez Whitten (100), Hill (400, 4x400), Aleks Hristov (shot put, discus), Noah Jirgens (hammer throw), A'tiq Muhammad (100), Julio Pacheco Estrada (400, 4x400), Mathew Polk (400), Zacarius  Velasquez (long jump), Xavier Westmoreland (discus) and Amir Williams (110H).
 
A trio of Miners will see action at the 65th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. Benhadja (400H), Simpson (100H) and Woodley (110H) will compete in the elite division of their respective events at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Saturday.
